Some of this I really like. I do think there is an inherent value to certain skills that isn’t going away. CEOs may technically be able to configure an AI to develop an app, but they won’t. Just like they won’t use fiver to make their logo. It puts way more onus on them to learn the tool, perfect the tool, with no one to “come fix it” when it doesn’t do their bidding.
We are a very long way away from an AI that is integrated and reliable enough to replace a complex team of skilled and creative people.

If folks shift to using a personal AI to learn about new products, or even offload decisions about what to buy to their AI, well, do you need a website anymore? Maybe you just need information delivered in a way an AI can read it. Do you need marketers? Maybe, but maybe you need marketers who understand AI, not people.
The headcount will be greatly reduced, not completely eliminated. They will only need three Senior marketers to quality check and direct the AIs, instead of those three seniors managing a team of thirteen juniors.
The more I think about it, the less I’m convinced that AI will take all but the lowest quality jobs possible. It makes stuff up and that issue isn’t going away and will the current approaches aren’t helping (hello AI drivel used for training), so AI cannot be used for mission critical applications until that’s resolved.
Also, by and large people can tell AI generated content a mile off and the tone is usually flat so it’s not engaging. So unless your business is currently in the game of generating lower quality content - then your product will still need people to give it its competitive advantage. That doesn’t mean AI won’t be used, it’s just that it will improve the productivity of *people* rather than replacing them.
Have you tried getting a grip with o3-pro and similar models? The amount of talent that is beeing thrown at ai is off the charts and I totally see this tech evolving day by day. Thinking we hit the plateau is naive if you ask me.

When you really study history, you come to realize that this (bottom-up revolution or internal war) almost never actually happens IRL. Logically, it makes sense, but in actuality it tends to be some stratum of the elite who push for revolutionary change.
As a rule of thumb, we as the masses by and large don't know how to organize ourselves into a cohesive unit potent enough to push for change, or even burn it all down in frustration. Think of it this way, if the scenario painted by the writer of this article suddenly materialized tomorrow, could YOU see yourself personally revolting?
I think that most of us will have to just accept it for what it is. I do believe that a lot of us will end up breaking off into our own enclaves though, where people perhaps return to the countryside and relearn self-sufficiency. If I lost any access to an income and was watching my child starve to death, I absolutely could see myself revolting. I can definitely picture an epidemic of squatting to the point where laws around private property become unenforceable. When >50% of the population can’t pay rent and also 50% of homes are vacant, they’re not going to just go live outside in tents. They are going to move into whatever empty houses they can find.
The entire idea that we suddenly have access to this powerful technology that can reduce the need for human labor to almost zero while still producing everything the economy currently produces and that is going to lead to a drastically lower quality of life for the majority of people is absurd, anyway. If we have access to this technology which basically amounts to a super genius with a quadruple digit iq in our pocket, maybe we don’t need jobs at all. Maybe “how to not lose your job” isn’t even a question we should be trying to answer because we won’t need a job. We can build a self sustaining micro-economy or something.

You could say that robots could perform these and maybe AI can design a better robot but cheap, physical labour will be hard to replace. It's always be decided by economics so whilst AI development could be exponential I don't think its progress into replacing humans will be. Anyway, all exponential process run out of steam eventually due to finite resources. That resource will be power.

For me it was about solving engineering problems and not so much about money so companies (I worked for dozens of them on a freelance basis - it worked for both of us) used to throw money at me to solve their problems whereas I saw it as a way of not getting bored. I'm now retired and work as a part time volunteer in a hospital. One of the best jobs I've ever had.

There's nothing stopping a couple million of us from walking out of our jobs and coming together to form our own self-governing communities, where we use modern tech to create the conditions we seek.
But we won't do that. Instead, we'll continue to launch movements aimed at getting our governments to push for some kind of changes on our behalf (they couldn't if they wanted to). Most of us aren't built to be leaders, and we don't want to be. We dream of change so long as it doesn't interfere with our radius of material or emotional comfort.

I agree with a lot of this. In the longer term (10 years?) most jobs will be done by automation of some kind or another. The knowledge worker jobs will go first, and they're already going at an accelerated rate. The physical jobs, the ones that require robots, won't be far behind. Nobody, and I mean nobody, knows how this will play out, so one absolutely critical capability we all need to have is agility so we can go easily where the path takes us. We need to see where things are going, and be able to adapt to whatever new reality may come. And we will definitely need to be very, and I mean very, fluent in the use of GenAI. That's just table stakes.
We're already starting to see glimpses of the future though. One of the defining impacts of GenAI on existing/legacy company functions is a sizable reduction in the cost of operations. On the other side we can see that startups are starting to look more like 'tiny companies' that are GenAI native--where the technology is woven into every aspect of the operation such that companies with very few employees can serve many people. They do this by hiring generalists who can coordinate between colleagues and GenAI resources to solve cross-domain problems and exploit opportunities. See the NYT recent article: A.I. Is Changing How Silicon Valley Builds Start-Ups. The author highlights Gamma, a company with 50 million users but just 28 employees.

There will be jobs in the future for those who are agile in finding and securing them. You will also need to be comfortable defining your job as guiding GenAI resources of various kinds in a generalist fashion to amplify your value to companies. As Greg noted, you can't think in terms of outputs, of what you do today. You have to go back to the root of what your company needs to achieve and figure out how to achieve it for them as well as possible.
I think that right now the mostly likely career path forward is as an AI consultant or an AI transformation leader or coach. (BTW As part of doing that job, you willhave to repeat ad nauseum with a sincere look on your face that AI won't take jobs to the very people whose jobs it will decimate. To a few senior leaders you can say the truth.)
Those roles will last as this post points out about 10 years (that way it did for "Agile coaches" or "agile transformations")/
After that the tippity top of the cream of that new class of knowledge workers will still be able to wring some value out of it as expert consultants helping companies to "fix" their bad AI implementations. But that will be very, very few people.

I've been hearing this for 3 years. It would theoretically free up a lot of workforce that could be used in sectors that can't be automated yet. Unfortunately it's not happening.
This is such a timely post. I’ve been reflecting on the value I’m bringing to my org and how to better position that value while creating opportunities to showcase it. This really reinforces why that’s so important.
One thing I’d add to the playbook: make sure your outcomes align with company goals and stay aware of the AI platforms that might eventually do the work you're doing. Better yet, position yourself as the one who brings in and leads the optimization using those tools.
At the end it is all mathematical logic. Again. And the question is not "work -> income" but rather "no work -> distribution of goods" in the future...

As Greg noted, you can't think in terms of outputs, of what you do today. You have to go back to the root of what your company needs to achieve and figure out how to achieve it for them as well as possible.
I think that right now the mostly likely career path forward is as an AI consultant or an AI transformation leader or coach. (BTW As part of doing that job, you willhave to repeat ad nauseum with a sincere look on your face that AI won't take jobs to the very people whose jobs it will decimate. To a few senior leaders you can say the truth.)
Those roles will last as this post points out about 10 years (that way it did for "Agile coaches" or "agile transformations")/
After that the tippity top of the cream of that new class of knowledge workers will still be able to wring some value out of it as expert consultants helping companies to "fix" their bad AI implementations. But that will be very, very few people.
These are my opinions but I think there is still value in doing everything in this post! Any port in a storm!!
I am positioned to be that so transformation leader. Seeing it so bluntly makes me think. I just don’t see another path forward in this society.

Not sure there is one for non tech folks or people not already established in their industry.
I've been hearing this for 3 years. It would theoretically free up a lot of workforce that could be used in sectors that can't be automated yet. Unfortunately it's not happening.
It’s like full self driving cars, except it’s only been 2 years away from being better than humans for 3 years instead of 10.

This is such a timely post. I’ve been reflecting on the value I’m bringing to my org and how to better position that value while creating opportunities to showcase it. This really reinforces why that’s so important.
One thing I’d add to the playbook: make sure your outcomes align with company goals and stay aware of the AI platforms that might eventually do the work you're doing. Better yet, position yourself as the one who brings in and leads the optimization using those tools.

At the end it is all mathematical logic. Again. And the question is not "work -> income" but rather "no work -> distribution of goods" in the future...
Here's a clear view from Peter Diamandis in his podcast: "Minimum wage in California today is $20 an hour. [....] And we're talking about this, the projected price per hour for operating a humanoid robot is going to be a dollar an hour. At a base cost, it's 40 cents an hour, but at maintenance and electricity and everything else on insurance, it's a buck an hour. And this arbitrage between a dollar an hour for a GPT-5 level, GROK-4 level humanoid robot that operates 24-7 compared to a, you know, a teenager from California, there's just no comparison."
Facts / serious estimations. So we urgently need society with all its subsystems to very rapidly (1) acknowledge the inevitable and (2) find ways to adapt to make everyone flourish thanks to AI.
